Biographical / Historical

Mrs. L.B. Peet was Hannah Louisa Plimpton, second wife and widow of Rev. Lyman Burt Peet (1809-1878). He was a Congregational missionary in Siam during 1839-1849 then was one of the first missionaries allowed into China in 1949. When he retired from FuChow in 1871, they returned to Connecticut to live.

The lot in question is described as follows: parts of Lots 9 and 10 in Block 61 of Le Claire's Second Addition. The street address was 107 East Second Street. The property was obtained at a Sheriff's sale in November 1872 according to Scott County, Iowa Deed Book 30 Town Lots page 470. A three-story brick building sat on the lots.

James Goldsbury was a land agent in Davenport who apparently handled affairs for the Peets. The postcards are correspondence sent from him to Mrs. Rev. Peet after her husband's death regarding the property.

The property was sold by Mrs. Peet in November 1883 to Holbrook & Co. The firm had been tenants in the building for quite some time.

In 1885 the widow remarried Rev. Charles N. Hartwell and they returned to China to continue missionary work. Mrs. Hartwell died there in 1908.
