Biographical / Historical

Oakdale Memorial Gardens formerly Oakdale Cemetery Company official began with an approval and adoption of articles of association on February 5, 1830. Business men of Davenport, Iowa including J.M.D. Burrows, R.M. Prettyman, George B. Sargent, John Dalzell, J.M. Witherwax, C.C. Parry, Henry B. Hoffman, Strong Burnell, William H. Hildreth, Joseph Lambrite, Hiram Price, A.H. Barrow, John M. Cannon, John L. Davies, and William H.F. Gurley organized for "the purpose of providing, maintaining, and improving a suitable place for the burial of the dead, in or near the city of Davenport." In the subsequent years, the company grew and established articles of incorporation on May 14, 1856. The affairs of the corporation are managed by a board of directors.

The original grounds consisted of 40 arces of rolling hills, paved roadways, grass alleys, and a modern man-made lake, and grave markers made of a variety of materials was locaed on Eastern Avenue. With additional donations of land and purchase, the cemetery grew to 78.1 acres. The landscape design of the cemetery was designed by Captain George F. de la Roche in 1856.
