Biographical / Historical

The Assumption High School Concert Band - 1967

Carl A. Paarman served in World War II and then became the principal bassoonist with the Denver Symphony for a few years before returning to Davenport in 1951. For a while, he managed the M. L. Parker Department Store record department until opening his own business: “Paarmann’s Record Store.” He became the music director at Assumption High School when it opened in 1958 and later joined the public schools, teaching at Sudlow Junior High and finally West High School until his retirement in 1985.

The album took three months to tape with the assistance of sound engineers Rev. Eugene Harasyn and Rev. Marvin Eldred. Record Publications Company in Camden, New Jersey recorded the album from the tape furnished to them.

One thousand albums featuring the Assumption High School Concert Band were produced in 1967 as a fundraiser to finance their trip to the Red River Exhibition in Winnipeg, Canada during June 1967. Each album sold for $5.

Sudlow Junior High School Band - 1972

Jack King was the longtime director for the Sudlow Junior High School Band in Davenport, Iowa and led them to the Iowa Bandmasters Association Convention Honor Concert at Cedar Rapids, Iowa in May of 1972 where they recorded this album. As one of fourteen Honor Bands and one of only three junior high bands chosen, the group performed for the Bandmasters convention and was recorded by Vilar Sound Recording in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were selected by association officials after taped performances of public and parochial school bands throughout the state.
