Biographical / Historical
Shirley Helen Kallenbach was the eldest living child of Raymond and Lillian (Sass) Kallenbach. Born in Davenport in 1926, Shirley welcomed two younger sisters - Evelyn and Margaret or Peggy. Shirley graduated from Davenport High School in 1943 and worked as a bookkeeper at Schlegel's Drug Store in Davenport before marrying Vernon Peekenschneider in April 1948.
Vernon was the son of Herbert and Hulda (Hachmann) Peekenschneider. He was born in 1922 and raised in Scott County, attending county schools. He had one older brother, Earl, who became a world champion Skat player. Vernon and Shirley farmed in Scott and Cedar Counties until Vernon's sudden death in October 1967.
After Vernon's death, Shirley married Willard Misfeldt in 1969 and lived in Waterloo, Nebraska. She continued to be active in her church and wrote a column for the Douglas County Gazette. She died in Nebraska in 2011 and is buried there with her second husband.
Shirley had no children, nor did her sister Evelyn. Their sister Peggy had three children. They lost their mother at a young age to cervical cancer. Many of the pictures in the scrapbooks are of neighbor children and Sunday School children from St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Davenport. There are also nieces and nephews of Shirley and Vernon.
