Regional History Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 2021-14

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of published items, photographs and postcards associated with the nearby Iowa and Illinois regions. The published items appear in the library catalog, the postcards are of sites in Rock Island, Port Byron and the Rock Island Arsenal. The photographic images date from 1892-1913 and include one cabinet card of a mature woman taken at Clifford and Son studio in Muscatine, Iowa ca 1895 and six black and white prints that were removed from an album at some point taken between 1911-1913. The photographs have little identification other than dates.

One group photo is identified as Dri Park. Research indicates this was located in the bluffs north of Le Claire, Iowa and got its name from the Davenport Rock Island Railroad.

Another print features a relatively small boat with the name Santa Lucia on the stern with the phrase "on their way to the gulf" written on the back. A craft called the Santa Lucia was described in a newspaper article from October 19, 1911. The 60 foot boat was propelled by gasoline power and belonged to Captain M. V. Goetzendorff. Along with wife and son Carl, they had stopped off in Davenport on their way from St. Paul to New Orleans.
