Biographical / Historical
When Lincoln School opened in the 1940s, the neighborhood (just on the eastern edge of downtown Davenport, Iowa) was still densely populated. By the 1970s, the population in the neighborhood had declined so much that it couldn’t support a standard “neighborhood” school. Lincoln School was subsequently converted to a special facility and re-named Lincoln Fundamental School. For 20-30 years, Lincoln Fundamental served as a special enrollment "magnet school" — open to all in the district, but with a special focus. In the early 2000s, that purpose was no longer suitable, and the school was closed.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. A non-profit opened in the former school in February 2021 and the building became known as the Lincoln Center.
Both the donor and his brother, Heath Janssen, were alumni. The gift is donated in memory of Heath Janssen, who died in 2016 but loved Lincoln School and Iowa very much.
