This collection consists of a mimeographed copy of Frank Schaefer's adoption certificate. It is signed by the birth mother, Helena Bertram Schaefer Adams, and the adoptive parents, Claus and Anna Bertram (Helena's parents, Frank's maternal grandparents).

Biographical / Historical

Franklin H. Schaefer was born to Edward F. and Helena (Bertram) Schaefer in Scott County, Iowa on 12 June 1890. After Edward Schaefer died, Helena married John Nelson Adams in September 1895; they had several children together. The 1900 and 1910 US federal census records list Frank as Claus and Anna Bertram's grandson. Helena's death and marriage records verify she was Claus and Anna Bertram's daughter. John and Helena moved west where she died in Seattle, King Co., Washington in 1926. Frank remained in Scott County, married Amelia Wahler in 1914, and made his living as a salesman. He names Helena and Edward as his parents in the 1925 Iowa State census.
