Content Description

Photocopy (22 pages) of an original letter from Austin Corbin in Davenport, Iowa to his parents, Austin and Mary Corbin in Newport, New Hampshire, October 29, 1851. The letter's opening briefly describes the cities of Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois; its conclusion the scenery and towns along the Mississippi River between Lansing, Dubuque, and Davenport; and its bulk recounts Corbin's journey via railway, steamboat, stage coach and private carriage from Bellows Falls, Vermont to Davenport by way of Buffalo, NY, Detroit, MI, and across Illinois from Chicago to Galena. Photocopy (27 pages) of a typed transcription of the Corbin-Corbin letter, edited and with endnotes added. Photocopy of original and typed transcription (1 page) of a letter of recommendation for Austin Corbin for a schoolteaching position from Ralph Metcalf to Brooks Kimball, Newport, New Hampshire, October 18th, 1846.

Biographical / Historical

Austin Corbin was born in 1827 to Austin and Mary (Chase) Corbin of New Hampshire. Before moving to Davenport, Iowa in 1851 he studied the law, receiving his degree in 1849. By 1854 Corbin had become a partner in the Davenport banking firm of Macklot and Corbin; by June of 1863 he had opened the First National Bank. Two years later he sold his interest in the bank and returned east. He continued a successful career in banking and railroads until his 1896 death in New Hampshire.
