Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two 8 x 10" pen and ink sketches on notebook paper signed "Art Kroppach" that were located in a 1920 U of I Hawkeye yearbook. The sketches are both outdoor scenes.

Secondly is an oil on canvas framed painting created by Gay Tydeman in 1947 and entered into the Mississppi Valley Fair in Class 1602. The painting in the frame measures roughly 30 x 36" and is in relatively good condition. It is titled "His Honor the Mayor of Davenport Art Kroppach 1947".

Biographical / Historical

Arthur "Art" R. Kroppach served as a Republican mayor for the city of Davenport, Iowa from 1944-1954. He was elected to the City Council as alderman for the Fifth Ward in 1934, then was elected alderman-at-large for eight years. President Dwight Eisenhower named Kroppach Davenport postmaster in 1954 where he served until his retirement in 1968.

Kroppach was born May 5, 1895 in Burlington Iowa where he graduated from high school. He received his B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1917. After serving with the U.S.Army in WWI, Kroppach returned to the University of Iowas and received his law degree in 1920. He joined a college friend in the practice of law in Davenport.

He was instrumental in establishing the Davenport Airport Commission and the Davenport Municipal Airport at Mount Joy, installation of parking meters in downtown Davenport, off-street parking projects such as the parking ramp at 5th and Brady, and a levee improvement project that included construction of a seawall and fill-in to make the levee usable throughout the year.

Kroppach died May 18, 1980 at the age of 86.
