Scope and Contents

This unique collection all pertains to the Iowa Soldiers' Orphans" Home employees, children and grounds. It consists of twenty gem portrait tintypes by the Davenport photographer Olmsted, some with identification, believed to be dated to 1866. There are five CDV size images of the grounds dated 1867 taken by photographer Bowman of Ottawa, Illinois.

ISOH Matrons identified are Clara Jester, Lu Clarenbaugh, Miss Goodill, Mrs. Jones, and two unidentified women. Children living at the cottages are identified as Wallace Cousins, Serepta Graham, Anna Graham, George W. Kerr, Jesse E. Lowe, Ella McConnell, John Morgan, Shortie (a boy), Ida Wood, and one child possibly Edwin Wood among four unidentified images.

Images of the grounds show the extant cottages after the Civil War, the barracks that had been used at Camp Roberts/Kinsman.
