Scope and Contents

This collection consists of personal papers of George March Sheets. Bulk of photographs pertain to the activities of Iowa National Guard Battery B and Battery D during their Mexican border service in 1916 - 1917 taken by Davenport Times staff photographer Guy Bacon. One glass negative and seven acetate negatives also pertain to these activities. There is a small panoramic photograph of the Davenport Democrat staff ca 1920s. A number of photographs can be found in the Handbook History of the University of Iowa manuscript authored by Sheets.

A scrapbook containing many local newspaper clippings regarding the Battery are pasted into a large scrapbook. Several loose items were found within the pages of the scrapbook and put in files folders.

Of special interest is a manuscript by Sheets written in 1960 about the History of Handball at the University of Iowa. It includes text and photographs, and the scope includes information relating to Davenport handball and other Iowa communities including places to play and people involved.

Book 3 of Sheets' autobiography dating October 8, 1965 to September 1, 1967 is found within the materials as well.
