City of Davenport Planning Department Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 2024-47

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of materials used by the City of Davenport Planning Department including drafting tools and city planning and building related publications. The drafting tools include a planimeter, a Wood-Regan Instrument Co. INC (WRICO) Lettering Guide, calligraphy pens, and 4 pencils used for drafting. The planimeter is a measuring instrument used to determine the area of an arbitrary two-dimensional shape.

The WRICO Lettering Guide set is stored in a wooden case, containing eight plastic stencils to draw parts of letters, numbers, and symbols in various sizes. There is a shift button at one end of the rule to allow the letter parts to be lined up correctly. The templates are all marked: "THE WOOD-REGAN INSTRUMENT CO. INC., NEW YORK", "WRICO", and "LETTERING GUIDE." They are stamped with template number specifying the specific size and sets of lettering. These lettering guides were patented in 1926.

Five metal pens stored in a removable part of the wooden case. The pens are sizes 2, 3, 5, 6 and 6. In most cases, the numbers on the case correspond to the numbers on the case. However, the section for 4 contains a size 5 and the one for 5 contains a size 6.

Additionally, there is an WRICO lettering pen No. 7 in a wooden case separate from the lettering guide set.

The publications include
