Biographical / Historical

On September 29, 1938, one hundred women gathered at the Lend-a-Hand Club in downtown Davenport for the purpose of organizing the Scott County Republican Women’s Club. This organization would be affiliated with the Iowa Council of Republican Women and the National Federation of Women’s Republican Clubs.

The inaugural minutes state the club’s purpose: “The object of this Club shall be to promote a wider knowledge of the achievements, principals and policies of the Republican party; to encourage active citizenship; to co-operate with the State and County Central Committees in campaign work for the election of candidates for office; and in various other ways endeavor to foster the spirit of fealty that will express a high ideal of Americanism and patriotic service.”

Today the Scott County Republican Women’s Organization is the largest Republican women’s club in the state. It continues to meet monthly, and has an active presence on social media.
