Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photocopied research materials relating to the George Davenport Family residing on what is known as Arsenal Island, Rock Island, IL. The topics included are relating to business interests, correspondence, genealogy, and early Rock Island history. Highlighted in this collection are letters referring to shipping materials to build the first home in the Quad City area, circa 1833.

Most of this collection consists of photocopies, reproduced from originals in the Archives of the Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis. The collection these materials come from is the P. Chouteau Maffitt Collection. They are for research and reference use only. They are not to be reproduced in publication or published in any form without the express written permission of the Missouri Historical Society.

Other photocopied materials are photocopies from the Rock Island County Historical Society in Rock Island, Illinois and from the history and archives division in Des Moines, Iowa.

Biographical / Historical

The Colonel Davenport Historical Foundation was founded in 1978 to preserve the Colonel Davenport House, located on the Arsenal Island in Rock Island, Illinois, and to tell the story of the life of Colonel George Davenport and the development of the Quad Cities region and upper Mississippi River corridor through educational outreach programs and on-site programs to the local community, Quad Cities school districts, and visitors.

The Colonel Davenport Historical Foundation (CDHF) mission is to preserve the Colonel Davenport House and site, and foster knowledge of the history and development of the Quad Cities region through tours of the house, exhibits, and educational programming.
