Biographical / Historical

In August 1918 a Soldiers' Mothers' Club was formed in Davenport with forty-five members. This club held meetings twice a month. As soon as the Legion decided to have an Auxiliary, the Commander called a meeting. They applied for and were granted a Charter in 1920 to be known as the Women's Auxiliary Unit of Davenport Post No. 26. Membership in the unit was open to the mothers, wives, daughters and sisters [by birth or by law] of all men and women who were in the Military and Naval Service of the United States any time between April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918 and who died in line of duty or after honorable discharge and prior to November 11, 1920.

American Legion Unit 26 of Davenport donated these items after a fire burned down their longtime Legion home at Snug Harbor. Their new facility didn't have enough space for these items. Some records were destroyed in the fire but the majority were saved.
