Biographical / Historical

Located on the southeast corner of Fifth and Iowa Streets in Davenport, Iowa, the Crescent Macaroni and Cracker Company was founded by Hugo Schmidt and partners in 1874. After his death, son Oswald Schmidt took over the business. They held annual excursions for employees and their families. On September 14, 1929 after a semi-annual sales convention closed, 300 employees and their families boarded the steamer St. Paul for an all-day river trip. Entertainment consisted of dancing, games and contests.
