Biographical / Historical

This project was a joint effort in 1998-1999 of DPL, Open Cities Film Society supported with funds from RDA. The call was put out for motion picture film from the QC area shot before 1980. If donor wanted original film returned, offer was made to evaluate, clean, copy footage, and return originals. Many many films were submitted and reviewed. Ultimately, 15 were chosen for preservation. Selection criteria for donated film footage included historical significance, rarity due to age and/or subject matter, uniqueness with regard to other footage in the archives, production quality, physical condition, relationship to other materials in the collection, and general interest to the public.

In 2011, all 15 of the films were digitized from Beta tapes by AVS, a local company.

Five different films were digitized with the assistance of a National Film Preservation Project grant in late 2011.

Newspaper articles highlighting the project can be accessed from the Quad City Times, Friday June 6, 1997 page T1 [TODAY section] and The Dispatch and the Rock Island Argus from Sunday April 6, 1997 page G1.
