Biographical / Historical
The Tuesday Club was organized in 1892 by Miss Elizabeth “Bessie” Griggs at her home in Davenport for the purpose of providing a study club for younger women, similar to the local Clionian Club, which originated in 1874 for older women. (The average age of the original Tuesday Club members is 27.8 years.) The Club Constitution indicates their objective was “intellectual improvement”. Membership was limited to thirty women residents of Davenport and vicinity. They met every other Tuesday afternoon with limited exceptions. Meetings included social time, refreshments and discussion of literature and presentation of programs on various topics researched by members. Each member is required to write a research paper and read it to the club once every three to four years. Occasionally guest speakers were invited to present on a topic. Notable past members include Alice French (Octave Thanet) and Susan Glaspell.
