Biographical / Historical
Of the 28 young women in this Fromader Studio image from 1940, two have been identified based on documentation written on the back of the print. Ethel Mae (Guenther) Hamdorf is noted as being in the third row, middle. Ethel was born to Edward and Ida (Dierks) Guenther in Wheatland, IA. She is listed among the students at St. Luke's in the 1940 Federal Census. She married Donald H. Hamdorf 3October1942 and worked as an R.N. in the Clinton, IA area. Mrs. Hamdorf died in July of 2016. Frances Maxine (Parnell) Cannady is believed to be in the image. She is listed among the students at St. Luke's in the 1940 Federal Census. She was the daughter of Lester and Elizabeth Parnell. After serving in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II, she married Nathaniel Ellis Cannady, Jr. in 1946 and eventually settled in Asheville, North Carolina. She died in February 2009.
