Biographical / Historical
The Mississippi River Valley Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America, Inc. was founded in 1977, encouraging women from both Iowa and Illinois to participate. Their mission is to inspire passion for the needle arts through education and the celebration of its heritage.
The newsletter was started in 1978 and regular board meetings were established. The group also held their first show. They began an evening group in 1979 and the chapter held two workshops during the year. By 1982 membership totaled 156.
As time passed additional programs began, such as the Saturday Stitchers, Getaway Weekends, and Persistance Projects. Several members of the group have achieved national recognition for their needlework and teaching skills.
Working as a special project, the group designed and created tapestries for the Col. Davenport House and participated annually in Festival of Trees. Their Needlework Shows attract hundreds of guests each year.
