Fairmount Cemetery Association records

 Collection
Identifier: 2012-32

Scope and Contents

This is a large collection of documents generated by the West Davenport/Fairmount Cemetery Association from 1881-ca 1980s. The general condition of the items is very poor to good. They were stored for many years in the basement of the crematorium and were subjected to fire, moisture, mold, ashes, dirt, etc.

The documents reflect the business dealings of the cemetery and crematorium including lot ownership, perpetual care trusts, employee records, financial records, death, cremation, interment and burial records.

Earliest records are generally found in the ledgers which are in exeptionally fragile condition having gone through a fire and difficult storage conditions. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1930s-1970s.

Within the correspondence copies of wills and legal documents can be found when a bequest was made affecting the Cemetery Association in some way. Duplicate death certificates 1918-April 1921 are a unique record found within.

This collection is only partially processed. Some unique documents have been entered in the Special Collections Index. Many documents retain odor and are not yet processed, however they are grouped. Many ledgers were burned badly and difficult to work with.
