Biographical / Historical

In the fall of 1889, Phebe Sudlow began one of the first women's groups formed in Davenport, Iowa - a club for women of her church, St. John's Methodist. Membership was limited to 25 people because the group traditionally met at members' homes. The Club of '89 met weekly to study the women of the Bible. According to an undated constitution, its objective was the intellectual improvement and the promotion of higher moral and social condition.

Over the years, the club transformed into an educational outlet that went beyond studying the Bible, with members sharing book discussions, reviews and current events.

This club was still active as of 2020.
