1902 Topographical Map Scott County, Iowa by Huebinger

(Excerpted from The Davenport Democrat and Leader, Wednesday, May 9, 1923) Melchoir Huebinger was one of the best known surveyors and map makers in the Middle West. Mr. Huebinger came to America from Germany in 1880 and entered the employ of the United States government as a surveyor. He was assigned to the army engineer's office in Rock Island, where he worked under the direction of Major Hoffman. Later he was employed as a surveyor at the Rock Island Arsenal. Prior to coming to this country he was in the government service in Germany for several years as a map maker and surveyor.

Resigning his position with the government at the Arsenal, Mr. Huebinger entered the photograph business in Davenport with his brother, Adam Huebinger, following the latter's arrival in this country from Germany.

The photograph work was not altogether to his liking and he resumed the map making business under the name of the North American Publishing company with headquarters in Davenport. He operated in Davenport, Des Moines, Waterloo and Peoria. The name of the corporation was later changed to M. Huebinger & Co., map makers. The office was moved from Davenport to Peoria some four or five years ago when Mr. Huebinger and his family took up their residence in the latter city.

Mr. Huebinger was commissioned to prepare maps of the city of Davenport and the state of Iowa for exhibiting at the World's Fair held in Chicago in 1898. He has prepared and published hundreds of atlas books, plats, record books and maps on cities and counties in Iowa and Illinois.
