Biographical / Historical
Edwin A. Staunton (1834 PA - 1906 Davenport, IA) was listed as a photographer in the Davenport city directories from 1896-1906. The address of 219 W. 15th matches his studio location at the time of the disastrous East Davenport Fire which started on the banks of the Mississippi near East Fourth Street on July 25, 1901. The fire spread quickly to the Weyerhauser and Denkmann lumberyard, gathered strength, and traveled down River Drive, consuming buildings on both sides. The fire eventually burned itself out that same day, after having destroyed more than eight city blocks. The damages were valued at one million dollars and almost 50 families were left homeless.
