Scope and Contents

This collection consists of three series. 1) handwritten list on Works Progress Administration stationary "List of Soldiers Dead from Scott County as of July 1, 1881"; organized by regiment/company; includes name, place, date and cause of death; unknown source

2) Information compiled in 1916-1917 by A.W. Crans, the G.A.R. post commander 1915-1916 and written in two composition books. Organized by place of burial, then alphabetically and include the individual's name, regiment/company, cause, date and place of death. Includes the patriots who were moved from Oakdale to Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery by the U.S. government October 1867. Includes G.A.R. members who participated in the Black Hawk, Seminole and Mexican Wars, Philippine War. Oakdale, Fairmount, City, Pine Hill, St. Marguerite's, Holy Family, St. Mary's, Pleasant Valley, Argo, Tiedje, LeClaire, Prairie Church, Allen's Grove, Princeton, Dixon, Mt. Joy, McCausland, Jacks, Buffalo, Blue Grass, Summitt Church, Long Grove, St. Ann's, Walcott cemeteries in Scott County, Iowa. Also burials in Keokuk, Cedar Rapids, Mt. Pleasant, Marshalltown Iowa Soldiers Home, Malolm, Prairie Mills, New Hapton, Tipton, Folletts cemeteries all in Iowa; Rock Island Arsenal, Chippiannock, and a number of cemeteries in Illinois and other states. Lists of comrades with and without headstones.

3) Historical documentation and correspondence regarding the G.A.R. burial plot in Oakdale Cemetery and confusion over the location. It appears in 1866 Lot No. 140 in Section 2 was used for the interment of seven soldiers, and a portion of lot No. 13. Then in 1896 an egg/oval shape piece of ground between sections 11 and 12 was ordered donated to August Wentz Post No. 1 G.A.R. with the understanding the G.A.R. would return the deed of such property owned and remove bodies to the new lot. In 1904 for the price of $1 the deed officially granted a certrain oval shaped tract of land which had been used for sometime past as the Post burial ground, located between Sections 8, 11 and 12.
